While Hodor, played by Kristian Nairn, rose to popularity in the past four seasons of "Game of Thrones,' the character has only said one word: Hodor.
Looking into George R.R. Martin's books, the Stark children believed that the stableboy's name is really Hodor. However, Hodor's great-grandmother Old Nan revealed that his real name is Walder.
It has then led to the question as to why the character keeps on uttering the same word over and over again. The name might also have an important meaning in the "Game of Thrones' story, which could possibly be explained in the upcoming season of the widely acclaimed hit series.
As reported by Watchers on the Wall, "Game of Thrones' season six will put forward a flashback that will offer viewers with more information about Hodor's origin story.
A "very reliable" source claimed that fans can look forward to a Stark family flashback next season, "complete with the origin of Hodor." The website also noted that teen English actor Sebastian Croft will take on the role of young Ned Stark in the flashback scene, together with other actors playing Ned's younger siblings.
When he appeared on "HuffPost Live' last month, Nairn opened up about his thoughts regarding the meaning behind "Hodor.' The 39-year-old actor shared that the term could be associated with the Norse Hodr, who is known as the god of winter.
"George [R.R. Martin] calls on mythology in his writing," Nairn said. "Does he do anything by accident? I don't know. It could be part of the whole 'winter is coming' thing; the others, the actual White Walkers -- he could somehow be connected to them."
Nairn was talking about a fan theory suggesting that Hodor is an agent of The Great Other, the god of darkness and cold who is said to be an equal of the Lord of Light, R'hllor, in the "Game of Thrones' universe.
It has also been assumed that The Great Other is another name for the Night's King, who was finally shown in the "Hardhome' episode last season.
Although the theory could be possibly incorporated into the TV series, Nairn is uncertain whether this is indeed the origin story about his character's name.
"I would like there to be a dragon, and the word to control it is 'Hodor.' He somehow tames it with the word 'Hodor,'" the Irish actor added.
"Game of Thrones' season six is expected to premiere in April on HBO.
