Weeks have passed since it was reported that "Hannibal' star Mads Mikkelsen is being considered to take on a villainous role in the new Marvel film, "Doctor Strange.'
However, in a recent interview with Chinese website Mtime, the 49-year-old actor admitted that the film studio has not yet offered the role to him.
"I know as much as the rest of the world about it," the Danish actor said. "So far it's been rumors, and so I'm waiting for a phone call."
Widely known for his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter on the now-cancelled NBC series, Mikkelsen also shared how he would feel if he lands a role in "Doctor Strange.'
"And if they do call me I would be over the moon," he admitted. "It would be fantastic to be part of the Marvel family, I mean it's something we all grew up with and we all have our heroes and Doctor Strange is definitely one of the more interesting things."
According to Variety, although there have been no offers for Mikkelsen, one is expected to come up any time these days.
Deadline also confirmed such report, stating that negotiations are at the preliminary stage and that the actor is one of the few individuals being thought of to take on the unannounced villainous role.
It has been speculated that Mikkelsen could portray any of the following villains- Dormammu, Blackout, Nightmare, D'Spayre or Mephisto.
If he is chosen for a role, the "Casino Royale' actor will join a star-studded cast that already includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Vincent Strange, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordon and Rachel McAdams in a role that is yet to be announced.
This has not been the first time that Marvel considered Mikkelsen to join one of its movies. The film studio previously approached the actor to portray an antagonist named Malekith in "Thor: The Dark World.'
However, his obligations in filming "Hannibal' did not allow him to sign on to the cast. Eventually, the Malekith role was handed over to "Doctor Who' actor Christopher Eccleston.
If negotiations push through, "Doctor Strange' would become Mikkelsen's second high-status big-screen role after the cancellation of "Hannibal'. He recently bagged a role in "Star Wars: Rogue One,' which makes its way to theaters on Dec. 16, 2016.
Helmed by Scott Derrickson and Jon Spaihts, "Doctor Strange' is set to begin filming this November and will be released on Nov. 14, 2016.
