The latest teaser trailer released by BBC satisfied "Sherlock' fans when it comes to more details for the upcoming Victorian special, "The Abominable Bride.' More images have also been unveiled, featuring the characters that will make an appearance in the special and how they will be associated with Sherlock Holmes' roots.
Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as the iconic detective alongside Martin Freeman who will return as his companion, John Watson. In the photos, fans can see Sherlock wearing his deerstalker hat and pipe, closely resembling the classic interpretation of Holmes as opposed to the contemporary version that the hit series' viewers have been accustomed to.
"What if the world's most famous consulting detective and his best friend lived in a Baker Street of steam trains, hansom cabs, top hats and frock-coats? Welcome to Sherlock in 1895! Some things, though, remain reassuringly the same. Friendship, adventure and especially, MURDER...," the official synopsis for the special episode states.
The overview also mentions Thomas Ricoletti's surprise over his wife's old wedding gown, which she wore when she took her own life. Her ghost seemingly hangs about the streets as she seeks for revenge.
Holmes, Watson and their acquaintances are then challenged to overcome this enemy who apparently came from beyond the grave, hence the title "The Abominable Bride.'
Other familiar characters who will make an appearance in the period-set special include Amanda Abbington, who returns as Mary Morstan, and Una Stubbs, to reprise her role as Mrs. Hudson. Meanwhile, Louise Brealey and Rupert Graves will also be featured as Molly Hooper and DI Lestrade, respectively.
As for the Abominable Bride herself, "Misfits' actress Natasha O' Keefe will make her debut on the series and take on the role of Mrs. Emilia Ricoletti.
Writer and producer Steven Moffat shared how he and co-writer Mark Gatiss came across the idea for a Victorian special.
"Mark and I were having a fun day on set and then we just thought: 'Could we ever just do maybe one scene or some dream sequel or something?'" Moffat said.
To be shown in selected cinemas, the upcoming special "Sherlock' episode is expected to drop hints about the fourth season of the hit series, which will be aired in 2017- three years after the third installment was released.
However, "Sherlock' season four will put the character back to the present day.
As for "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,' the Victorian special is set to air on BBC1 on Jan. 1, 2016.
