Speculations about "Star Trek' returning to the small screen have been considered for the past few years, but now it has been made official after it was confirmed that a new TV series is currently in the works.
CBS Television Studios shares its confidence that the project will get to have an impressive premiere, announcing that its air date will be in January 2017.
The upcoming series will reportedly bring on new characters as the story is set to explore new worlds and new civilizations, while delving deeper into theatrical contemporary themes that have been a key element for the widely popular franchise since it began in 1966.
Producer Alex Kurtzman, who previously worked on films such as "Transformers,' "The Amazing Spider-Man 2' and the "Star Trek' reboot in 2009, is leading the new TV series. However, Roberto Orci, Kurtzman's frequent partner in onscreen projects such as "Star Trek' and "Star Trek Into Darkness,' will not be working for the new series, as reported by Screen Crush.
Orci was recently involved with the upcoming sequel "Star Trek Beyond,' which has been scheduled for an official release in July 2016. The new TV show will reportedly be unrelated to these latest films.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the search on to find a suitable writer for the new series, which will be made available on ordinary cable as well as the subscription streaming service, CBS All Access in the US.
The last name to be linked to writing the series had been "X-Men' writer, producer and director Bryan Singer.
The upcoming series has also been set to go with the original show's 50th anniversary and will be deemed as Star Trek's first TV venture after the cancellation of "Star Trek: Enterprise' in 2005.
"Enterprise' was known to be one of the four spinoff programs that was released after the original "Star Trek' completed its run in 1969. Other small-screen shows included "The Next Generation,' "Deep Space Nine' and "Voyager.'
Casting details for the upcoming TV series are yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, "Star Trek Beyond' is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2016, two months before the 50th Anniversary of the "Star Trek' franchise.
