While readers of DC Comics are familiar with the romantic bond between supervillain Harley Quinn and Batman's archenemy, The Joker, it seems that "Suicide Squad' actor Will Smith has yet to divulge more details about another villainous figure who will be romantically tied to Harley.
The 47-year-old star, who takes on the role of assassin Deadshot in the upcoming film from DC Comics and Warner Bros., has revealed that sparks will fly between his character and that of Margot Robbie.
"Harley is the biggest troublemaker but Deadshot's actually eyeballing her a little bit," Smith told Empire. "There's a pretty ragged romantic triangle there."
Looking into her origins in the more comic-based DC universe, Harley Quinn and Deadshot have been featured as a couple for more than a few times, with the assassin even sacrificing himself once to protect Harley's life.
Their relationship in Suicide Squad might also bring on a chance for Harley to separate herself from the Joker, enabling her to become her own character, as opposed to merely being his sidekick. This has been a concept that director David Ayer previously discussed.
"It's about her breaking free of the Joker and becoming this fully actualized, independent person," the helmer said. "That really is a metaphor for everyone's journey here."
Before ending up in a psychotic state, Robbie's character was known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel who had been assigned to Arkham Sylum where she worked and provided treatment for the Joker.
Observing how she was becoming more interested in his psychotic disturbances, the Joker used such obsession to manipulate Dr. Quinzel and mislead her into teaming up with him.
Although it is uncertain whether Ayer will be focusing on this idea for his version of Harley Quinn, the official "Suicide Squad' trailer does show Robbie wearing glasses and a doctor's coat in several scenes.
Based on the scenes shown in the trailer, it can be presumed that the Joker caries out his promise to hurt Robbie's character "really, really bad," from which the mad and crazed Harley Quinn comes to be.
Meanwhile, Smith has also drawn attention to how his character ended up becoming one of the most wanted lawbreakers.
"As the movie opens, he has a really big career score," he said. "He's looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in Belle Reve for life."
"Suicide Squad' draws attention to a number of imprisoned antagonistic figures, who are forced to complete Black Ops tasks for a crooked government agency in order to have less severe jail sentences in return.
"Suicide Squad' is set for a premiere on Aug. 5, 2016.
