When "Supernatural' returns for season 11, Sam and Dean Winchester will have to face another out-of-this-world being that will surely be a thrilling surprise for the fans.
The brothers were shown being surrounded by the darkness, an evil force that pre-dates the Bible, in the last season. While it seems that they will survive this huge deal of trouble, as pointed out by the season 11's photos, certain things will continue to be threatening for the siblings as they seek to gain victory over a primal force.
"Supernatural' executive producer Jeremy Carver spoke to TVLine about what is to come for Sam, Dean, Castiel and Crowley in the new episodes.
Carver emphasized how the Winchesters will seek the help of their allies in defeating the darkness, and this might lead to the creation of certain unholy alliances with past characters.
"They're going to have to confront some figures from their past," Carver revealed. "They're going to have to make some unexpected and unholy alliances involving folks from their past, which will have personal ramifications."
While Sam and Dean work together in fighting the primal force, the main concern in dealing with the evil force is determining its needs, wants and capabilities as well as its weaknesses.
"There's a lot of mystery to not only to what or who the darkness is, but what the darkness wants," Carver explained, "That's something the show takes its time building and playing with, and it really causes the brothers some fits."
In addition, the darkness will manifest itself into another being. Although Carver did not share details on the character portraying the darkness, a recent report stated that actress Emily Swallow has signed on to "Supernatural' as a female antagonist named Amara, which could mean that the darkness could morph into a certain femme fatale.
Carver also revealed that Crowley continues to hold a grudge against Rowena and plans to have revenge on her. The king of hell, however, will also have to discover how to work things out in a new world where the darkness is making threats not just on Earth, but in heaven and hell as well.
Castiel will also have to deal with his own problems; aside from offering aid to the Winchester brothers in defeating the darkness, the angel must also eradicate the attack dog spell that Rowena cast on him.
In the season 11 premiere of "Supernatural,' Castiel is also expected to be weaker and more defenseless.
"So for Castiel, we're going to see him in something of a vulnerable state early on in the season," Carver said.
"Supernatural' season 11 is set to make its premiere on Oct. 7 at 9 p.m. on ET. Its promo can be viewed below.
