After the last aired episode of "Supernatural' season 11 brought on several shocking revelations, fans were surprised to see Sam Winchester trapped in a cage with Lucifer himself while Amara admitted her feelings for Sam's brother, Dean.
In the fall finale, the return of the devil, played by Mark Pellegrino, had been a trap to Sam, and the visions that the Winchester brother has been seeing were not from God but from Lucifer in order to lure him back to the cage.
"God is not with you, he was never with you. I guess I am your only hope," Lucifer says to Sam, played by Jared Padalecki.
In episode 9 titled "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," Amara attempted to reach out to her brother, God. However, when her prayers were not enough, she ended up performing a massacre to get God's attention. During Dean's confrontation with her, the Darkness explains that she is not the real threat.
Rather, she explains that God was threatened by her. He was particularly afraid that she would become a more perfect creation, thereby exiling her and spreading stories that she was a danger to all.
She also touched the subject of God's religion, saying that it became a means to "feed his ego." If people worshipped him, he would offer them safety and protection. On the other hand, Amara insisted that, with her, there would be no rules and appeals- only bliss.
"I was the beginning and I will be the end. I will be all that there is," she tells Dean, adding: "God was the light. I am the dark."
Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean, previously dropped hints that Amara may not be the ultimate villain in the story.
"She is still assessing what this creation is that God made and I think the very famous line of her so far is that 'He is the light and I am the opposite of that, I am the Darkness.' What's interesting is, I'm not sure if that's inherently bad or if that actually could be something that is beneficial," he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
After going on a winter hiatus, "Supernatural' season 11 will return with brand-new episodes on Jan. 20, 2016. The CW released a trailer for the series' midseason premiere episode, titled "The Devil in the Details,' suggesting that the show will get to celebrate a late Christmas.
